Ivan Hampshire Retirement Village

Location:  Ivan Hampshire Place | Newlands, Cape Town

Year:  2018

Ivan Hampshire is one of the Cape Peninsula Organisation for the Aged (CPOA) independent living venues, situated adjacent to their Newlands Head Office.

The brief called for a complete refurbishment and fit-out of the new residents’ Lounge and the existing interleading Atrium. Since access to this venue is gained through the CPOA Head Office reception area, Ivan Hampshire was naturally going to become a showcase venue too. As with our other CPOA projects, we were fully aware of working within budget constraints.

Despite the fact that the space is pretty uncomplicated in terms of shape and size, we still went through the process of space planning. We played with various furniture layouts for optimal use of both the Lounge and the Atrium. The final furniture layout for the Lounge was cemented over a cuppa coffee while sourcing… on a napkin. We kid you not!

The Lounge:

Included in the soft furnishing brief were all the furniture, curtains, scatter cushions, rugs, wallpaper and art for the lounge. As with all the other venues, the Procurement Manager set the pace for the colour scheme. Teal, tones of blue, soft greys, white and silver. We customed manufactured deep, luxury-styled sofas, contemporary tub chairs and deep-buttoned wingbacks for the space. It sounds amazingly simple. However, putting together a soft furnishing scheme with all these decorative elements does take time to flesh out. Especially when multiple parties have to give it the nod.

The Atrium:

The Atrium had, up to that point, been used as a transition area or gathering space and had very little seating. Consequently, we wanted to convert this big and under-used space into an inviting, bright and happy public area. Additional deep-buttoned wingback chairs were introduced to entice residents to linger longer on sunny days. Budget in mind, we chose to work with some existing furniture pieces. We gave new life to a “Banana Leaf” suite by applying a bright floral patterned fabric to the seat and back cushions. Similarly, four existing Planter chairs were painted white, repositioned, and decorated with the same happy floral fabric cushions.

The images speak to the end result. A very comfortable space which feels new, inviting, warm, pleasant on the eye, while also just that little bit entertaining. Showcase worthy it seems!
